To speak of May ‘68 is not only to speak of the events, but also to speak of the intellectuality of politics. How can we do that today, more than fifty years later? I took part in May ‘68. But I’m unable to describe what I was doing back then, even though I can share a few memories and anecdotes: funny situations, happy situations, serious ones, tragic moments, and violent and cruel situations. For me, May ‘68 isn’t a matter of memory; it’s a question of the intellectuality of politics.

I therefore distinguish two great sequences: the first, which I call the arc of revolution, spanning from the late eighteenth century to the 1920s; and a second arc, running from 1920 to the present, which I name the arc of the party-states. For me, the so-called “revolutions” after 1920 fall within the sequence of the arc of the party-states.
